Strathallan School is providing online piping, poetry and prose for those interested in celebrating Robert Burns today.
Hosted on YouTube, the 30-minute video was initially created to help Strathallan families celebrate Burns Night but the video has proved very popular online with more than 2000 views from as far afield as Saudi Arabia, Canada and Germany.
Aileen Wilson, Alumni & External Relations Manager at Strathallan, who organised the event said she was amazed at how many views it already had received.
“We’ve been toasting Robbie Burns at Strathallan for as long as I can remember so we couldn’t imagine not having a Burns Night. Taking it online this year has allowed us to continue a significant tradition for the school but it has also meant we could include more amazing performances and share the wonderful talent of our pupils and staff with anyone who wants to celebrate Burns.”
Burns Suppers have been a long-standing tradition in Scotland and beyond, dating back over 200 years. It all started a few years after the death of Robert Burns. Nine of the poet's friends decided to gather in the cottage where he was born in Alloway on the 21 July, the date of his death. The party's intention was to 'offer tribute to the memory of the departed genius'. The decision was then made to honour him in future years on the anniversary of his birthday, 25th January.
So join us as we raise a dram or soft drink in memory of the Bard with our very own virtual Burns Night:
