Competing for Strathallan for the first time, Erica secured an impressive six out of seven first-place finishes and clinched the coveted Special Fling Trophy, emerging as the overall winner in her section at the competition held at Merchiston Castle School.
Reflecting on her achievements, Erica said, "I was so chuffed to come first because it’s the first time I’ve ever danced for Strathallan and the competition was really strong. All the dancers were lovely."
Despite the high level of competition, which was organised and judged by the Royal Scottish Official Board of Highland Dancing, Erica’s hard work and dedication shone through.
Erica, who began dancing at the age of three and took up Highland Dancing at five, said dancing had always been there for her.
She added, "I enjoy it because I’ve always danced with friends and I associate dancing with fun. Any younger pupils interested in Highland Dancing or any dancing go for it. It keeps you fit, it makes you part of something bigger. It’s exciting and exhilarating when you have an audience, whether on a stage or in a competition. Highland Dancing gives you a feeling of doing something for your country too, and you might get the chance to represent your country all over the world."
Whilst at School, Erica trains under the guidance of Miss Chloe Roome, Highland Dancing and History teacher at Strathallan, and attends Fiona Henderson’s School of Dance when at home in the Borders.
Miss Roome commended Erica’s dedication, stating, "Erica has worked very hard in practice sessions to get her dances up to top standard. Hard work has paid off, and I commend Erica for always putting in 100% and being receptive to feedback. Well done, Erica!"
Highland Dancing is one of the many Scottish culture subjects on offer at Strathallan since the launch of the Department of Traditional Music & Scottish Culture in September 2021. Led by former Red Hot Chilli Piper, Craig Muirhead, the department offers exciting opportunities for students to learn about and immerse themselves in Scottish Culture.
