Olympic and Commonwealth call-up for Strathallan swimmer Evan

Strathallan School pupil Evan D has been selected to fly the flag for Great Britain and Scotland this summer as he heads to both the European Youth Olympic Festival and the Commonwealth Youth Games.

The 16-year-old from Forgandenny, will have a very busy summer, having had his selection to Team GB and Team Scotland both confirmed within 24 hours.

First, he will face Europe’s elite swimmers in Slovenia as he competes at the European Youth Olympic Festival for the second time.

Next, he will put his pace to the test against the top young athletes from across the Commonwealth in Trinidad & Tobago a month later in August.

Speaking of his selection, Evan said, “It’s an honour to be selected for the European Youth Olympics and the Commonwealth Youth Games.”

“Competing at the European Youth Olympics last year in Slovakia was a huge moment for me personally and I’ve learned a lot since then. I hope I can now do my best for both Great Britain and Scotland this summer and race at my peak.”

Evan, who was one of the youngest GB swimmers selected last year, has had a phenomenal season, becoming Scottish Junior Champion at the Scottish National & Open Swimming Championships in 2022. He also gained a massive personal best in the 400m IM at the British Swimming Championships Junior Final in April.

Since last summer Evan, who swims for Perth City Swim Club in competition, has gained invaluable experience swimming for Team Scotland at the Geneva International and for Team GB in Toronto where he won silver in the 4x200m and two Scottish Age Group records.

Director for Swimming at Strathallan, Elaine Johnston, said, “It’s a great achievement to be selected for such prestigious events at such a young age. With last years’ experience behind him and the hard work he’s put in the pool this year, I am sure Evan will get out there and give it his all.”

Strathallan Headmaster, Mark Lauder commented, “I am delighted to see Evan’s hard work and dedication in his training, and his attitude to his swimming, being rewarded with both success in competitions and his selection for GB. He deserves all the credit and recognition. The school is both delighted for him and proud of his achievements!”
