Unbeaten Netball squad named National Champions

Strathallan School students have been named National Under 14 Netball Champions after a nail-biting final at the Emirates Arena.

Strathallan’s U14A Girls team beat St Ninian’s in the Netball Scotland Scottish Schools Cup.

The final was tied at 21 all with 20 seconds on the clock when the Strathallan side created an opportunity for Co-Captain Olivia D to score the winning goal four seconds before the buzzer.

The last-second win not only secured the team as the best Under 14 squad in the county but also brought an unbeaten season for the girls to an end. The team won all 8 fixtures this seaon, scoring an impressive 210 goals.

Olivia D, said, “I am so proud of our U14A team making it to the final and being undefeated at every previous match. We knew that when the final came it would be a close match between us and St Ninians. It was an amazing feeling making to the final and also a bit nerve-racking heading to The Emirates Arena to play the match.

“The whole game was close, 21 to 21 coming towards the end of the fourth quarter. In the last six seconds, Flora passed me the ball. I had not realised how little time was left on the clock when I scored the winning goal with seconds to spare.

“When we realised we had won we all huddled together and started celebrating, I felt so happy and proud of our achievement. It’s a day I will never forget.”

Co-Captain Flora R, added, “Winning the Scottish Cup and being co-captain of the team has definitely been my best achievement at Strathallan so far. I am glad I am part of such a great team and we couldn’t have done it without each other.

“I look forward to playing more netball and improving with the team in future seasons.”

Netball Coach, Louise Waugh, said, “I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the team this term. From the start they have shown themselves to be exceptionally hard-working, turning up for extra sessions and leaving no room for doubt that they would be at their best on the day.

“The determination they showed in the final stages of the match was impressive, as they dug deep to create a scoring opportunity showing real teamwork. Each of the girls had a role and responsibility and knew exactly what they had to do. Olivia showed nerves of steel to score the final goal with 2 seconds to spare. I am so proud of them all and their hard work had paid off.”
