Rachel selected for national hockey squad

Strathallan School pupil Rachel F has been selected for Scottish Hockey’s National Emerging Girl’s Squad.

Rachel said it was a huge honour to be picked for the team.

“I’m so thankful, it’s a great opportunity and I can’t wait to see what comes next. To get the chance to go abroad and get that type of training will be great.”

Rachel, who first picked up a hockey stick at the age of 8, is no stranger to elite sport with her older brothers Zander and Matt Fagerson both playing rugby internationally for Scotland and were recently selected for the Scottish Six Nations squad.

“Growing up we have always been competitive and always play sport in the garden,” added Rachel. “We were always playing mini rugby matches and having fun but its inspiring watching my brothers get into professional Scottish squads from a very early age and learn from their experiences.”

The Centre-back has her sights set on playing hockey in the United States after she leaves school. Rachel was recently named Player of the Tournament at a recent Hockey Performance Coaching Indoor Tournament after Strathallan 1st XI went undefeated.

She continued, “We started the hockey season really well, we haven’t lost an indoor match yet so we hope to keep that going.”

Director of Sport, Jim Thompson, said, “Over the last few years we have seen successes across the whole school, both indoor and outdoor, which has been fantastic to see. We are really proud to see Rachel and a number of other girls and boys going on to play at regional and national level hockey.”
